Keep the North Shore Sane

This blog will be about the North Shore of Oahu. The focus will be on the politics, economics and lifestyle of the North Shore. The North Shore is such a small place, people are often intimidated and do not speak their mind. Here you can speak your mind. I accept guest posts either by name or anonymously as long as they are not obscene. Let's argue, let's be opinionated and let's really dig down into the issues that affect our lives here on the North Shore of Oahu.

Will Turtle Bay become another Waikiki?

Here are some statistics from a DBET study of Waikiki done in 2003 about Waikiki and information derived from public information and statements made by Turtle Bay. The complete report is here DBET Report - Economic Contribution of Waikiki

  • Acreage - Waikiki- 650 acres. - Turtle Bay - 800 acres.
  • Total Hotel Rooms and Condominiums - Waikiki -37,000 hotel rooms and condos - Turtle Bay - 1,000 current hotel rooms and condos, 4,500 if built out to 100% of zoning.
  • # of Businesses- - Waikiki has 1,600 businesses - Turtle Bay (counting the hotel and golf course) has 10. At 100% of zoning 30 - 40???
  • # of Visitors - Waikiki - 3,700,000 visitors a year. - Turtle Bay has about 300,000 (includes golfers, diners and special events attendees).
  • # of Employees - Waikiki- 32,000 workers. - Turtle Bay - 650 employees. At 100% of zoning 2,000 employees???

The organized opponents to Turtle Bay have made "Turtle Bay Will Be Another Waikiki" part of their message in all of their letters to the editor, protests, websites and other propaganda. I leave it to the reader to look at the statistics and determine the accuracy of the anti-Turtle Bay people and whether this arguement should be believed.

Give me a break. These statistics are lies just like everything else Turtle Bay has been telling us.

Interesting....Statistics are just that statistics, it's all in the interpretation that we get confused. These numbers are facts not fiction.

Your argument is very confused. It sounds like you are highlighting how great the status-quo is now. These are statistics of the past. The point of anti-Turtle Bay development is to protect the future. The events that occur in the present-time set precedence for expansion in the future. So yes, Turtle Bay WILL be Waikiki unless we take preventive measures.

    Dear "thinks I'm confused",

If you read the post carefully, hopefully you'll see that the numbers for Waikiki are current, the numbers for Turtle Bay are current and there are also PROJECTED numbers for Turtle Bay. I use the projected numbers for Turtle Bay to illustrate how ABSURD it is to say Turtle Bay would be like another Waikiki. That is an outright lie and distortion to confuse and frighten people.

    Look, it worked on you??

But what I dont understand is this: The traffic can get horrendous. Wont it get worse if we increase the amount of people we have to accomodate on the north shore?

Also, what many people value about the north shore is its small town feel. Isn't expansion a threat to that feature?

And lastly, because this IS an island and people can easily commute doesn't that mean that an increase of tourists in turtle bay would mean more tourists on the island as a whole? And when Waikiki is bursting to the brim, is that wise?

Also, people = waste. I don't even feel like I need to put that into the form of a question concerning our enviroment.
