Keep the North Shore Sane

This blog will be about the North Shore of Oahu. The focus will be on the politics, economics and lifestyle of the North Shore. The North Shore is such a small place, people are often intimidated and do not speak their mind. Here you can speak your mind. I accept guest posts either by name or anonymously as long as they are not obscene. Let's argue, let's be opinionated and let's really dig down into the issues that affect our lives here on the North Shore of Oahu.

Bummer - North Shore Festival Cancelled

I just got the following announcement.

Looks like the finances did not work out for the event formerly known as Sunset on the Beach and last year - The Makahiki Festival. That was always a fun time for all. It's too bad but who wants all those people to come over here anyway??? .... ummm .....well I guess I did.

Haleiwa, HI (October 25, 2007) - Organizers of the North Shore Festival, set to take place at Haleiwa Beach Park, November 10 and 11, as the kick-off to the big-wave winter surf season, regretfully announce today that this year's Festival has been cancelled. All vendor deposits will immediately be refunded in full.

Despite an all-time high in vendor applications and entertainment interest, a short fall of sponsorship dollars prevented the event from moving forward.

"We're sure it is going to come as a bitter disappointment to all the vendors who have submitted their applications, and to the residents of the community who were appreciative of the entertainment. Said Festival organizers, "We would sincerely like to thank all of the sponsors, vendors, members of the community and the surf industry whose enthusiasm for this event was so inspiring.

All deposits will be fully refunded and those vendors who have questions should log on to www.northshorefestival.com and email via the "Contact Us" link. Alternatively, organizers can be reached at: (808) 499-8383.

That is to bad. I guess the big buck surfing companies did not step up. It has been tough to get $$$ since the city does not foot the bill anymore.

The event was always a hit with our family and our 3 kids. We will miss it. Thanks to Josh and Antya for trying so hard to make it happen, it's sad that it won't be there.

    Mahalo.

As a contractor involved with providing services for the festival the facts were that individuals from the Chamber did not follow thru on their responsibilities of the agreement (yes, signed agreement with Josh) with festival organizers...this time our fellow community officials are to thank for this community event going away...

Hmmm. Any chance you can share a bit more information with us? If not my private email is fine - hapamother@yahoo.com. I don't travel in those circles to much so I don't know what happened and why. The impression I got was that there weren't enough sponsors.

Since I dont have access to the agreement I would recommend either 1, ask the chamber to provide the agreement or
2, get it touch with the festival organizers thru their website.

I can't go into full details as I was involved as a contractor and don't have access to the agreement but my contact at the city cited "irresponsibilities" from the chamber with their agreement with the festival organizers.

The "lack of sponsorship" was the politically correct way to diffuse the questioning and perhaps channel blame to festival organizers and to the surf industry as "anonymous" eluded to.

I'm sure you know how some folks here would rather blame others than take responsibility for their mistakes?
