Keep the North Shore Sane

This blog will be about the North Shore of Oahu. The focus will be on the politics, economics and lifestyle of the North Shore. The North Shore is such a small place, people are often intimidated and do not speak their mind. Here you can speak your mind. I accept guest posts either by name or anonymously as long as they are not obscene. Let's argue, let's be opinionated and let's really dig down into the issues that affect our lives here on the North Shore of Oahu.

Lingle signs Kahuku Hospital bailout bill

This great news was in the Pacific Business News.

Special thanks to Ralph Makaiau of Turtle Bay Resort. Ralph has been on the Kahuku Hospital Board for ever. Recently, The Publisher of The Paumalu Press slandered him and John Dowd (who is not on the Board) saying that Makaiau and Dowd wanted to bankrupt the hospital so Oaktree could save it and get good P.R. I guess the Paumalu Press got this story wrong. While she did do a retraction about Dowd being on the Board, I wonder if she'll issue a retraction and apology to Ralph?

Also, nice work Michael Magaoay!

Lingle signs Kahuku Hospital bailout bill

Pacific Business News (Honolulu)- 5:49 PM HAST Thursday, May 31, 2007

Gov. Linda Lingle on Thursday signed legislation allowing the state's public hospital system to take over the financially ailing Kahuku Hospital.

The law, which gathered broad-based community support, appropriates $3.9 million to enable the 12-member Hawaii Health Systems Corp. to take over operation of the 25-bed hospital on the North Shore of Oahu in July.

The law stipulates that the physical assets and ground lease of the hospital will become the property of HHSC with the director of the Hawaii Department of Health facilitating the transition. HHSC also will have full discretion over which of the hospital's medical and nonmedical employees to retain.

In addition, $3 million will be set aside for the Department of Health to subsidize hospital operations.

In March, Lingle approved an emergency appropriation to give Kahuku Hospital $950,000 to keep it from closing.

Kahuku serves more than 20,000 North Shore and Windward Oahu residents and is the only hospital between Kailua and Wahiawa. It was set to close at the end of last year and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February.

Thank God that the hospital will stay open.

While I'm not sure I agree with the Turtle Bay guys role, I say BIG MAHALO to Mike Magaoay.

I think it is really sad that Ralph gets tagged with anti Turtle Bay retoric. The reality is, he has served his community well for many, many years. Without him, much of what we currently enjoy in Kahuku would not be here. I don't care who he works for....many of my friends work at Turtle Bay and most of them feel lucky just to have a job wiithout a commute to Honolulu. Ralph's works, as with others, are the true evidence......and they show he is a Son of Kahuku and represents us well! His participation should be noted.

    Thanks Ralph!!!!!
