Keep the North Shore Sane

This blog will be about the North Shore of Oahu. The focus will be on the politics, economics and lifestyle of the North Shore. The North Shore is such a small place, people are often intimidated and do not speak their mind. Here you can speak your mind. I accept guest posts either by name or anonymously as long as they are not obscene. Let's argue, let's be opinionated and let's really dig down into the issues that affect our lives here on the North Shore of Oahu.

Save Lives, Stop Traffic, Increase Aloha. Ban Surfing on Large Waves!!!

OUTLAW THE LETHAL, ENVIRONMENTALLY
DESTRUCTIVE PRACTICE OF
RIDING LARGE WAVES
It looks like the Shark Tours are going to be outlawed because people feel there is a possibility that they might pose a threat to people in the water 3 miles away. People are outraged that the Turtle Bay Resort expansion might cause traffic jams at some point in the future.
Well, there is something occurring every winter on the North Shore that is a proven lethal event that creates massive traffic jams. Not only does it kill several people every winter, it has caused catastrophic injuries in the hundreds if not thousands EVERY YEAR.
Surfing Large Waves Kills and Maims People, Causes Gigantic Traffic Jams And Destroys Aloha On The Water

Think of how many people have died. Think of how many of your acquaintances have been seriously injured. Think about how many ex large wave surfers are now drug and alcohol abusers trying to duplicate the rush of riding the big ones. How many fights and even deaths have there been over surf rage?

When Guy Hagi broadcasts - "The Country will be pumping!!!", you know that getting a shave ice for our kids is going to take an hour and a half round trip from Sunset. "The Mother of All North Shore Traffic Jams" happens when the Eddie runs and some 20,000 people all come out to see it. Any Saturday or Sunday with a high surf warning is guaranteed grid lock on the North Shore as people come out to ogle surfers on the waves.

The Duke's soul lives in the waters of Oahu. I am sure he hates the traffic, wave runners, fights, stink eye and the blatant, naked greed that commercial exploitation of surfing large waves brings to our holy ocean.

It is time to ban surfing, body boarding and swimming when the waves get over 15 feet. It will save many lives, thousands of injuries, suffering and heart breaks. Think of all the helpless keiki as they wonder if their large wave riding parents will ever come home again in one piece. Traffic would miraculously disappear. No one would drive an hour to the North Shore just to see a bunch of waves with nothing on them.

Limit big wave riding to Waikiki.

Ban large wave surfing, body boarding and swimming on the North Shore.

Defend The North Shore From Big Wave Riding.

Actually they already tried to outlaw surfing, a long with hula and the Hawaiian language. Surfing is an indiginous Hawaiian sport that has turned millions of people around the world into environmentalist.

I do not say to ban surfing, just big wave surfing. The kine that kills people, creates traffic and breaks up families.

I'm fine with other non destructive surfing.

It's great to see there is concern over what is happening on Oahu's North Shore in the way of expansion and development. The community needs to make sure that standards are upheld in order to Keep Country, Country.

As far as banning big wave riding, that is rediculous. Let's imagine, it's now against the law to surf waves 15+, is that going to stop surfers? I highly doubt it, now our police officers are sitting on the beach waiting for what?-5 to 10 surfers to come out of the water to issue a citation? How about that time spent by our men in blue dealing with real issues like crystal meth, ice, drunk driving?

Dealing with the traffic during winter surf season is a fact of life when you CHOOSE to live on the North Shore, you want no traffic, move to Molokai. There are business that thrive off the winter surf season which brings MILLIONS of dollars to the North Shore every year.

You say think about the keiki who wonders if their parent will come home in one piece-isn't that the responsibility of the parent? The ex big wave riders that turn to drugs looking for that "rush"--please, not only is that not proven but your suggesting taking away or outlawing the one thing that subdues that craving, so ban big wave surfing and turn MORE big wave riders into drug addicts? Yeah, good solution.

Everyone knows what winter swells bring, people and traffic, deal with it! Leave eariler to get shaved ice, better yet give your kid a banana and walk across to Sunset and watch the spectactular show mother nature has provided.
