Keep the North Shore Sane

This blog will be about the North Shore of Oahu. The focus will be on the politics, economics and lifestyle of the North Shore. The North Shore is such a small place, people are often intimidated and do not speak their mind. Here you can speak your mind. I accept guest posts either by name or anonymously as long as they are not obscene. Let's argue, let's be opinionated and let's really dig down into the issues that affect our lives here on the North Shore of Oahu.

The North Shore Broke List

Lot's of things are going to get broke and stay broke in the near future as the economy of the North Shore commits suicide, but more about that later.

Right now there is so much broke stuff that I thought it would be fun and easy to build a list. I think the Oahu politicians and bureaucrats really do not like the people that live between Waimea and Kawela because so much is broke there and stays broke:

Here you go:

Playground at Sunset Beach Elementary. 2 years and counting since the first yellow tape went up and equipment has been removed.

Tennis Courts & Basketball courts at Sunset - cracks big enough to break an ankle.

Basketball Courts and (Volleyball?) courts at Pupukea Firehouse - shut down and fenced off

All bathrooms in parks - GROSS, GROSS, GROSS

Skate Park - great idea, everything but the bowls in unfinished and broke

Administration Building at Sunset Beach El - no money to finish the interior of the building. Looks good but broke bad.

Kamehameha Hwy - worst state road in the country??? (USA, not North Shore).

Turtle Bay's Future - Golf tournament - broke. Development - broke. Future jobs - broke. Government involvement - worse than broke ... nuff said.

The only thing that I see happening from the state "takeover" of land is that they gave the control of the land to the DLNR. They are not capable of "protecting" the land; they don't keep it clean and are only another avenue of collecting moneys from the people. The only thing I see them doing out on North Shore/Kaena Point is writing violations and criminalizing the local population in the name of revenue collection! They seem to leave the homeless alone and go for the people that look like they have a buck and cite them for what have been normal activities for all my days.
Are the beaches any cleaner now that it is only comfortable for tourists, out of control youth & homeless?
We that live here don't even want to go to some of the best beaches and Kaena anymore because of the constant harassment by the DLNR wannabe cops. A lot of people that I know have received violations from DLNR for one thing or another, the “officers” are rude and treat good citizens with no respect. I know a few that have been searched and accused of illegal activities, having their vehicles searched with no warrant or good cause. This is a great abuse of power and extremely frightening.
They have WAY too much authority and no training to deal with the public. According to the Auditors report the DLNR “cops” are all misfits that were either rejected from agencies that they previously worked for or couldn’t pass the tests of local agencies. How much training do they receive before they are given that gun that they carry? The way they throw their weight around is down right frightening!
How much government do we need to fund? Why exactly the people that are are suppose to be protecting our Land and Natural resources harassing the local residents? How much of the funds that could be fixing our bathrooms and catching the people defacing our natural resources are being used to issue tickets to people having bbq, playing with their dogs or having a beer at a beach? (North Shore Lifestyle & why MANY of us CHOOSE TO live here)
Several of us got tickets drinking ONE beer with our sandwiches after we had been picking up trash on the beach all day,
We were told by the officer (in an extremely rude, overly aggressive manor) that they are not allowed to issue a warning citation. We were unaware that we were breaking a (NEW) park rule yet were treated like we were vicious criminals? When we made any question to why we were being treated so harshly we were told that he had the "Power to Arrest us and take everyone to Jail". Now there is no doubt of the new rules they are enforcing with unnecessary contempt for the residents since they put up a huge piece of plywood that says “READ AND OBEY THE RULES…”. (I wonder if that has been spray painted yet?)
I know many other people are feeling the hatred for this unmanaged & unleashed group of rogue officers as well as greatly fear retaliation for filing a complaint.
    WAY TO GO DLNR!
If their primary goal is to educate the Public on the importance of land management, why are they carrying guns and threatening to arrest people for enjoying the beaches after helping to clean them up?
Go ahead and read the North Shore Board Minutes from last month, I am not the only outraged citizen of the North Shore, DLNR run a muck…. I wonder if there is just one rogue officer or is it many? At least someone should look into this…. And if they are disgruntled then maybe they should look for a different job where they don’t have a gun… Maybe these are the guys that should be cleaning up the bathrooms? That to me would be a much better use of the funds if their primary goal is to "clean up the north shore.

    http://hawaii.gov/auditor/Reports/2006/06-01.pdf

Here is why, Chapter two, says alot, this whole Auditors report that you mentioned in your "rant" is here if anyone is interested. Very scary use of ALOT of money, is this how Turtle Bay will be managed? If anyone takes the time to read this report I am sure that you will realize that DLNR is managed as well as our bathrooms. And their use of millions that could be put to better use smells about as bad!

DLNR is more interested in obtaining more land (takeing it from our people) and "catching criminals" (that they turn into criminals) then they are protecting our lands.

This is a sad state of affairs...

Talk about "Broke North Shore" how about the people.

By the time the County gets done taxing the people off the land and DLNR takes it all many hearts are broken...

We lost the Kahuku Hospital due to the taxes being raised from 1 million to 11 million in a couple of years... and many homes are being lost, that is what is broken... The system is broken, our government walks around like Mr. Magoo, oblivious to the distruction in it's path, only caring about the revenues it can bring it. How much higher can the land tax go? How much more property can the gov tax us off of and then spend the money on stupid shit that they earned by displacing the people? Now they want to spend hundreds of millions to buy Turtle Bay and billions to build a light rail system on our backs?
It is all such a joke... when will the people start to say no?
