Keep the North Shore Sane

This blog will be about the North Shore of Oahu. The focus will be on the politics, economics and lifestyle of the North Shore. The North Shore is such a small place, people are often intimidated and do not speak their mind. Here you can speak your mind. I accept guest posts either by name or anonymously as long as they are not obscene. Let's argue, let's be opinionated and let's really dig down into the issues that affect our lives here on the North Shore of Oahu.

NIMBYS + CAVES = SERIAL PROTESTORS.

While looking at an article in the Honolulu Advertiser about what is happening over in Kailua, I came across and acronym that I had not seen before - "C.A.V.E.s". CAVES stand for "Citizens Against Virtually Everything".

I immediately came up with this handy mathematical equation:

N + C = SP

NIMBYs (Not In My Backyard) and CAVEs are closely related. Their solution to any changes/progress is to become Serial Protesters - those who protest against virtually anything that is in their backyard.

Thanks to the story writer Mike Leidemann a Advertiser Staff Writer for the chuckle and helping explain the situation out here on the North Shore in simple terms.

Fast Eddie Leads Protest To Keep Bones Hidden

There were many new faces at the Turtle Bay protest yesterday. I have to compliment Keep The North Shore Country in bringing in the `Ilio`ulaokalani Coalition to help them drive up attendance. At their last KTNSC protest (Post - The Lamest Protest Ever), they could barely bring enough people together to have a basketball game. Not yesterday, they could have suited up two full football teams with subs. All that aside, I was most impressed with the appearance of the nice folks from Da Hui company.

I've been getting a bit tired of seeing Gil "I Protest Everything" R., Karen "I Am A Poor Exploited White Woman From California" G., Jeanne "I Work At Turtle Bay, Therefore I Protest Everything About Turtle Bay" M., Mark "I Need Rescue" C. et al.

Great idea to bring in some people with real muscle and passion.

Fast Eddy and Kala A. bring something new to the party. If they asked me to do anything, I would most likely say yes in a heartbeat. Eddie in particular can be quite persuasive when wants to convince someone to come over to his point of view. He also has extensive real estate holdings on the North Shore and experience with development. He should be quite an asset for the cause. Gil and Eddie must go way back. In an interview on Da Hui's website, Eddie even mentions the Let's Surf Coalition (Gil is the President) Below is the link to the story.

http://www.dahui.com/newsite/asl-interview.html (WARNING - Profanity in linked article. Scroll to right of page for text)

I also noticed that in all her interviews Vicky Holt Takamine mentioned the dunes of Kahuku Point as being a particularly sensitive area and that land most likely contains ancient remains.

NEWS FLASH - Kuilima Resort Company agrees with Vicky and so do the people who set up the Unilateral Agreement. That is why the area Vicky is worried about is designated to be a 37 acre park.

Perhaps the information of the Kahuku Point Park being planned along with the addition of the new "blood" at the protests might add up to some progress and mutual agreements.

We can only hope.

Defend Oahu Coalition Proves That They Are Dictatorial Serial Protesters

I recieved the email below (in italics red) in my Inbox the other day from the Defend Oahu Coalition.

"FROM: oceanlandandpeople-bounces@defendoahucoalition.org; on behalf of; Defend Oahu [savekawelabay@yahoo.com]

To: savekawelabay@yahoo.com

CC:

SUBJECT: [Defend Oahu List] Pacific Business News poll on whether an EIS should be required for the superferry

Pacific Business News poll on whether an EIS should be required for the superferry. Because of all the businesspeople voting, the results so far are 35% YES 78% NO. Please vote YES in the following poll - http://pacific.bizjournals.com:80/pacific/poll/index.html It takes 5 seconds http://pacific.bizjournals.com/pacific/poll/index.html"

So, does this email sounds like it is against the Super Ferry and against busness?

The Defend Oahu Coalition assumed that it's members are against the Super Ferry? The DOH then decided that they should mobilize the resources - time, money and people to oppose the Super Ferry.

I WAS NEVER ASKED WHAT I THOUGHT! WAS ANY OTHER SINGLE PERSON WHO IS ALSO ON THE DOH LIST ASKED?

I like the idea of being able to take my van with my family and going on a nice boat ride to visit my relatives for not too much money. Don't give me that 100% shabai excuse that the ferry is worse for the enviroment than any of the other inter island transportation systems. If you insist on that, than I say you are as big of a liar as the Serial Protestors of The North Shore.

DOC just wants to protest. They are anti business, knee jerk socialists. They are no better than Dictators in that they decide what people should think.

I think all of you serial protesters from the North Shore should continue to blindly support the DOC and KTNSC without any discussions or any thought what so ever. Send them all of money so they can continue to think for you. They'll do a great job in a highly democratic and open manner.

Keep The North Shore Country Dupes Hawaiian Groups In To Stupid Protest

It makes me sick that Hawaiian groups that I know, love and belong to are being dragged in to the battle over Turtle Bay. Keep The North Shore Country has conned `Ilio`ulaokalani Coalition in to fighting their battle for them.

The two groups are planning to protest at Turtle Bay on Saturday March 17 against "Hawaiian Burial Sites on the property".

This is disgusting.

First of all, KTNSC has been fighting against Kuilima for more than a year. This means nothing to them other than another excuse to harass a legal business that they don't like.

KTNSC has been doing anything and everything to try and stop Turtle Bay. Since their first lawsuit failed, they have filed another lawsuit. Since they lost in court, they are trying to get legislation passed against Turtle Bay. You should have seen the faces of the people at the North Shore Neighborhood Board Meeting when they were told that the amended SB 851 bill would include areas outside of Turtle Bay like Pipeline and Sunset. Their faces dropped faster than the lifeguards responding to rescue Mark C. during the Pipeline Surf Contest.

So they got one person in the government to hear their story and write an opinion saying there are Hawaiian remains in the land that Turtle Bay owns and the set back for development should be 750 feet. Turtle Bay said rules and laws are already in place and they will take care of remains according to existing law and customs. KTNSC saw another excuse to raise a ruckus and they convinced a legitimate group of Hawaiian activists to "join" them.

Let's speak the truth here. Turtle Bay land, almost the entire property, has been developed in the past via the Kahuku Airfield on the Kahuku side. Arnold Palmer tilled the land after the sugar mill used it to build a golf course. Ditto George Fazio to build his golf course along with the condominiums and the hotel that exists. There were homes on the Kahuku side of Kawela Bay not to long ago. There have been cattle, sheep and sugar raised and harvested on this land.

If there are remains, they will be handled respectfully.

You know, I know and KTNSC knows that this is a shabai protest. I mourn for the true believers who have been lied to by these people who will use them only for their own benefit.

So protesting on St. Patrick's Day at Kuilima is going to accomplish what? It will make the Serial Protesters feel righteous. It will disturb the guests and workers of Turtle Bay (many Hawaiians themselves) and the Kuilima East and West Condo owners and their guests. It will disturb our tourists, it will cause traffic jams and it will solve nothing other than stoking these people's egos.

I feel sorrow, I feel sick to my stomach that the good Hawaiians who fight the good fight are being used and abused by these selfish people at KTNSC for their own purposes.

Major Motion Picture To Be Filmed On The North Shore

It's time update your old studio portraits. Details are just trickling out but it looks like Universal Studios is about to start a major film Forgetting Sarah Marshall starring Kristen Bell and Jason Segal and directed by Nick Stoller.

It looks like Turtle Bay Resort will be named as the location in the plot and I am sure there will be a big dose of North Shore in it.

My reporters tell me that Universal is setting up headquarters and production facilities at Turtle Bay and the project is already starting.

Maybe they'll have some spots for local talent.

PS, let me know via email if you hear anything interesting annonymous is OK of course.

North Shore Luxury Surfing Featured on MSNBC and Forbes

Looks like more positive news for the North Shore. MSNBC and Forbes on line have both featured Oahu's North Shore and Turtle Bay Resort as one of the top 10 luxury surf destinations on the planet.

No surprises for those of us who live here. I know that "closing business deals in the lineup" is an every day occurrence here.

PS, for the KTNSC & DOC faithful - Business is when two mutually agreeable parties exchange goods, services and/or money in a mutually agreed upon manner.

North Shore Setback Proposal Could Affect You

The article below is from the Pacific Business News 2-9-2007. This legislation - SB 851 was moved forward and supported by Keep The North Shore Country and The Defend Oahu Coalition. While originally intended to only cover the area that Turtle Bay has, it was amended and expanded and could now affect the area from Waimea to Koolau Ranch.

Looks like all those ocean front houses at Pipeline and Sunset might have some "issues" to deal with.

Nice job KTNSC and DOC. I think you guys should get another amendment added and have it extended all the way to Kaena Point.

Oahu shoreline setback proposal could affect entire state

A proposal to increase the shoreline setback to 750 feet for Oahu's entire windward North Shore has passed the Senate and could open debate about increasing shoreline setbacks for oceanfront property across Hawaii.

The original bill specifically named the Turtle Bay Resort and the plan by its owner, Oaktree Capital Management, to revive a 20-year-old master plan to add up to 3,500 units to the 880-acre, 443-unit resort.

But the bill was then amended in committee to encompass Oahu's entire Koolauloa district, which runs from Kaaawa to Waimea Bay and would affect all oceanfront development not only at Turtle Bay but at Hauula, Laie, Kahuku and Sunset Beach as well.

Setbacks typically are 40 feet from the shoreline, which the Hawaii Supreme Court defined in a ruling last fall as the highest wash of waves instead of at the vegetation line.

The bill's original intent was to protect any archaeological and burial sites along the shoreline from development within the Turtle Bay area between Marconi Road and Kawela Bay. It cited a letter sent from the state historic preservation division urging Turtle Bay to revise its plan because of the possibility that there are undiscovered burials within "100-150 meters of the shoreline."

The wording of the bill says developers would "be strongly encouraged to maintain a minimum shoreline setback of 750 feet."

But state Sen. Russell Kokubun, D-S. Hilo-Naalehu, who introduced the legislation at the request of a North Shore resident, said the bill was amended in committee to delete the reference to Oaktree and the Turtle Bay Resort because it was wrong to target just one project.

Terry O'Toole and Sharon Lovejoy, attorneys for Turtle Bay's parent company, Kuilima Resort Co., said that, in their opinion, the bill also could potentially create problems for existing properties with setbacks of less than 750 feet. "It's not going to do anything to the resort's plans," O'Toole said. "The setbacks that have been approved are basically there. This bill is not going to change the setbacks and it couldn't." While the bill was amended to broaden the area for the shoreline setback to one whole district of Oahu, it potentially could be broadened even further.

"I think that when we look at shoreline setbacks, that should be done on a statewide basis," said Kokubun, noting that the amended area was restricted by the bill's title, which names the Koolauloa District.

The Hawaii Chapter of the Sierra Club also sees the bill as a springboard to talk about the need to increase shoreline setbacks statewide, said Hawaii chapter Director Jeff Mikulina. The bill passed the full Senate on Tuesday and was sent to the House for consideration. The Turtle Bay development plan has drawn considerable opposition from residents who fear that it will have a negative impact on traffic, infrastructure and lifestyle on the North Shore. In November, a Circuit Court judge dismissed a lawsuit against Turtle Bay parent Kuilima Resort Co. that would have required the developer to conduct a supplemental environmental impact statement to expand on the resort.

Is KTNSC Going to Sell Used Cars Next?

I checked out the "ad" that Keep The North Shore Country put together for Surfing Magazine. It is a beautiful picture of a perfectly pristine, undeveloped Kawela Bay that is part of Turtle Bay Resort. The NTNSC ad is just like an ad for a used car that might not tell the whole story. Take a look at the picture.
  • - How convenient that the right side (Haleiwa side) of Kawela Bay is not shown. Why did they do that? It is because there are houses on the shoreline on that side of the bay. Very neatly cropped out of the picture so as to not let the truth interfere with the message.
  • - The photo is shot a perfect angle so all you see is the tops of the ironwoods and not the golf course that is behind the trees on the left side of the photo.
  • - Also, the "massive hotel" at Turtle Bay is no where to be seen in this ad.
  • - Kamehameha Hwy does not exist in this ad.
  • - As a matter of fact, it looks like humans have never ever even been to this part of the North Shore if you look at this ad. Hint if you had cropped just a little more off the right side of the photo you could have made the COMSAT radars disappear as well.
  • - Gee I wonder given those things mentioned above if there is even a remote possibility that KTNSC might (GASP!!!) have used PhotoShop in a shot like this?

My suggestion to KTNSC is to approach Turtle Bay and sell them this photo so they can use it for their own advertising. It is such a beautiful picture of a perfect resort on a perfect day with perfect conditions, with perfect everything. I personally have never seen the water in Kawela Bay so perfectly clear. AMAZING.

This is another example of the "distortions" that this bunch is putting out there.

Open questions to those who oppose Turtle Bay

- Why do you have to stoop to lying and distortions in your opposition to their plans?

- Does the truth of what Turtle Bay has done or is trying to do not suit your story?
